ABOUT THE EXHIBITION             

The photo exhibition covered chindonya performers focusing on the Osaka based chindonya group, Chin-don Tsushinsha (Tozai-ya).

Photos of Tozaiya's yearly vaudeville show in an old theatre. As well as documenting Tozaiya's work as chindonya in mainly Kamagasaki.

The photo exhibition was part of the Back Alley Art Festival in Kamgasaki, Osaka.

Sannou1124 Gallery in Osaka is based in a former over 70 year old "tachinomoya" alcohol shop.

The gallery doubles as a cafe and bar, which is so far only open on Wedensdays from 11-15 o'clock.

Apart from drinks it also serves delicious homemade sandwiches.

WHAT IS CHINDONYA

If you frequent traditional shopping districts in Japan, you will occasionally see some colourful musicians playing a catchy cocktail of New Orleans jazz, circus music, and wistful hits.

Welcome to chindonya, purveyors of a distinctive form of Japanese advertising dating back to the 19th century. Typically hired by small shops, their job is to entice passers-by to spend their money.

WHO IS KOJIRO HAYASHI

Kojiro Hayashi is a veteran chindonya plying the streets of Osaka. He founded his company, Chindon Tsushinsha (Tozaiya), in 1984 after an eventful introduction to the profession in “deep” Osaka.

Earth bar & event production

Earth Is a bar and cafe in front of Kamagasaki station, which is mainly open from around 13 to around midnight.

The owner of Earth, Terakawa Daichi, is also producer of artistic events and festivals.
